A 70-year-old former contractual worker of IIT-Bombay allegedly died by suicide at his home on Thursday morning.
The police said that Raman Garase, who allegedly hanged himself at his house in Powai gaothan area, was suffering from depression over health issues.
However, the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) group from IIT-Bombay alleged that Garase’s death by suicide occurred against the backdrop of his long legal battle with the institute for post-retirement gratuity for contract workers, which he had been fighting for since his retirement in 2018 after 39 years of contractual service.
“Prima facie inquiry indicates that IIT-B has nothing to do with the suicide case. He worked in IIT-B on contract and then retired. After he suffered a paralysis attack, he was depressed over his health and took the extreme step. He has not left any suicide note. His family too has not given any complaint, so we have registered an ADR,” said Jitendra Sonawane, senior inspector of Powai police station.
The family of the deceased refused to talk to the media.
Meanwhile, IIT-Bombay spokesperson said that the institute pays gratuity to eligible employees strictly as per the provisions of the prevailing Acts.
