With the end of the online admission process for first year junior colleges on Tuesday, the school education department is now gearing up for offline admissions to those who are yet to secure seats. The department will release a list of colleges with vacancies on Thursday.

While 1,996 students were not allotted seats in all three rounds of admission, there are still 57,849 seats up for grabs. These students will now have to apply for admissions offline. N B Chavan, assistant director at the office of the deputy director of education,Mumbai, said there is no reason to lose hope. “There are many vacant seats and the offline admission process will start from July 12. Students will now have to go to colleges and give applications for admission. Such admissions will be done only on the basis of the applicant’s merit and the number of seats available at the respective college.”

Last year,5,191 students were not allotted seats even after five rounds of online admissions and had to apply to individual colleges through the offline process. “This time, the process was less chaotic but students did get confused. Many students could not make up their mind on the order of preference for colleges. However, the number of students who missed out in the online process has dropped compared with last year,” said a principal of a South Mumbai college.

Officials at admission guidance centres and college principals said students failed to understand the online process and this led to a large number of them making mistakes in application forms. “Students missed out or could not manage to secure a seat as their cut-offs did not match up to the cut-offs of colleges they had listed in their form. They also did not apply for colleges where the seats are vacant now. We will now release a list of colleges with vacant seats at all admission guidance centres and also send it to education officers of all zones,” said Chavan.

A total of 34,046 aspirants were allotted seats in the third or final merit list. Around 21,920 students got seats under the betterment option in this round and 6,821 got a seat in a college that was their first preference. Students whose names have appeared in the third merit list have time till Thursday evening to confirm their seats in respective junior colleges.
