Five unidentified armed men gagged a 27-year-old owner of a jewellery store in Mulund east and decamped with gold ornaments worth Rs 15.40 lakh on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the police, the robbers, who pretended to be customers, entered the Bhagya Lakshmi jewellers located at Chintamani Depot Garden and threatened the owner of the store with a revolver and choppers. The incident happened around 1.45 pm on Wednesday when Sanjay Kumar, owner of the store, was about to close the shop for lunch. Kumar told the police that a man in his thirties approached him and told him he wanted to buy a gold chain. Kumar began showing him chains from the showcase when a second man entered the shop. Within a few minutes, there were five men in the store looking around. As Kumar turned to attend the rest of his customers, one of the five robbers drew a revolver from his pocket and threatened Kumar.
The five accused then tied Kumar and gagged his mouth before ransacking the store and fleeing with ornaments worth Rs 15.40 lakh.
When Kumar did not show up at his residence for lunch, his elder brother Devendra (37) came to the store and found the shutter down. He suspected foul play and lifted the shutter to find his brother tied.
Devendra informed the police and registered a case against the five persons. Shrimant Ghule, senior police inspector of Navghar police station, said Kumars store did not have CCTV camera. However, they are preparing the sketches of the accused based on the description given by Kumar.
Earlier,in a similar case, five unidentified killers slit a 39-year-old jeweller in Chembur and fled with the gold ornaments worth Rs 25 lakh on May 20.
Quaiser Khalid,Additional Commissioner of Police (east region),said they are investigating the cases and that there could a possibility of the involvement of the same gang in both the cases.
