Nearly 25 other trapped people were rescued from the building and no other injuries were reported, senior Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) officials said.
The incident was reported at 3.24 am inside the three-storey Oceanic Building, situated along B J Marg near Thakur Dwar.
According to preliminary information from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a fire broke out on the second floor of the building. While the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, sources said an electrical short circuit was a possible factor.
Ravindra Ambulgekar, Mumbai’s Chief Fire Officer (CFO), said that nearly 25-30 trapped people were rescued from the terrace of the building. However, three men descending from the stairs fell and injured themselves. The injured have been identified as Kartik Majhi, 24, Uppal Mandal, 26, and Deependra Mandal, 19.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Ambulgekar said, “While many were rescued from the terrace by firemen, three men climbing down the stairs from the back of the building slipped and injured themselves while escaping. However, they did not incur any burn injuries.”
Following their escape, the men were taken to the civic-run Nair hospital. Speaking to The Indian Express, a BMC official said the victims had sustained minor injuries and were discharged from the hospital. No other injuries were reported in the fire, the official added.
