NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad Monday said they would not allow the ongoing monsoon session of the State Legislature to function if right-wing activist Sambhaji Bhide was not arrested by Wednesday. Bhide is alleged to have made derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi.

After a break, the monsoon session was to resume on Wednesday and continue till Friday. On Friday. NCP legislator, who represents Mumbra-Kalwa constituency, along with other NCP party workers also went to Naupada police in Thane to give a written complaint against Bhide.

Thane police registered an FIR against Bhide under Indian Penal Code sections, including 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds) and 500 (defamation). Awhad, however, tweeted that a charge of sedition 153(B) be invoked against the right-wing activist.

Awhad said Bhide’s disparaging remarks on icons like Mahatma Gandhi and Jyotiba Phule, are a ploy to divert attention from serious issues like Manipur.

On Sunday, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said that police would take appropriate action against Bhide, asserting that insult to Mahatma Gandhi would not be tolerated.

Bhide was booked by Rajapeth police in Amravati on July 29 for allegedly commenting on Mahatma Gandhi’s lineage while addressing an event there last Thursday.
