Amravati City police booked against Hindutva activist Sambhaji Bhide after he allegedly made a statement questioning the lineage of Mahatma Gandhi.
Amravati City police commissioner Navinchandra Reddy confirmed the development to The Sunday Express.
He said that an FIR under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 505-2 (making, publishing, or circulating any statement, rumour, or report) of the IPC has been registered at the Rajapeth police station, Amravati.
“We have the audio recordings of the said event and are analysing the content of the speech. The investigation is on, and all action will be taken in accordance with the law,” commissioner Reddy said. Bhide made the alleged remarks while addressing a gathering at Bharat Mangal Hall in the Badnera Road area of Amravati Thursday during his Vidarbha tour.
