Films for Justice

This three-day festival will take place from October 31 to November 2.

A film festival by the Films Division of India in association with the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) India, is themed around the idea of injustice. Keeping with their promise of showing different forms of films — the festival will showcase animation, fiction shorts, features and student films, among others. This three-day festival will take place from October 31 to November 2. Curated by filmmaker Smriti Nevatia, the festival titled “Our Lives…to Live” will screen films that “portray people’s movements for the protection of their land, resources, livelihoods, cultures, health, lives, freedoms…”, as described in the curatorial note.

These films include music videos such as Native Bapa, a Malayali hip hop music video that went viral last year that speaks about innocents being branded as terrorists and Evening in Gay Maharashtra, by Suman Sridhar that plays on the word gay. The 1989 documentary Safdar, that reconstructs the shameful killing of playwright-writer-activist Safdar Hashmi and the Arabic live and animation film The Kingdom of Women, that documents Palestinian refugee women in Lebanon will also be screened. Besides the screenings, there will be discussions with some of the filmmakers themselves. For details of the schedule, visit the Facebook page of the Films Division.
