Men’s top-seed and favourite Siddharth Suchde sailed into the championship round,while womens favourite Saumya Karki set herself up for a triple crown in the 36th Bombay Gymkhana Maharashtra State Open Squash Championship at the Bombay Gymkhana on Monday.
Ranked No. 64 in the world,Suchde,who has just returned from the US Open,was in fine form as he cruised past Sandeep Jangra 11-6,11-6,11-8 in the semi-finals. In the final,Suchde will take on second seed Mahesh Mangaonkar who beat No. 3 Gaurav Nandrajog of Delhi 11-4,11-2,5-11,11-5 in the other semi-final.
Top seed in all the various categories she is participating in,Karki advanced to the womens,girls under-19 and girls under-17 finals after registering impressive wins against each of her opponents. She thrashed fourth seed Shaheeda Madraswala 11-3,11-3,11-1 in the womens category,while beating Aishwarya Bhattacharya and Aishwarya Kulkarni in the U-17 and U-19 categories respectively.
Karki will meet an unlikely opponent in the under-19 finals,however,after unseeded Urvashi Joshi of Jindal shocked second seed Shria Khatri in straight sets.
World junior No. 3 Mangaonkar also entered the boys under-19 final where he set up a clash with third seed Uttkarsh Kumar of Delhi,who in turn got the better of No. 2 Shashi Pandey of Jindal Squash Academy in a five-set thriller.
