Rohan Sippys 30-minute live act,Fashion Broadway, promises to capture the magic of the 60s
A Small town guy with big dreams,a honey-voiced seductress with a secret and a gun-toting gangster. Sounds like a familiar plot? Well,it is except that director Rohan Sippy promises to make a lot more out of what seems to be just a run-of-the-mill storyline. And no,its not for his latest Bollywood film; the storyline is that of Fashion Broadway,a 30-minute live act that boasts of song, dance and drama. Understandably,Rohan is kicked about directing the musical, which is a key highlight of the Chivas Studio 2011. Directing a live musical is new to me; moreover,it is something that hasnt been tried before by
anyone in India. That makes the experience a challenging one, he says.
Ask him if the scale of the production would be on par with its western Broadway counterparts and he admits the comparison wouldnt be fair as they are just starting out with this one. But he is quick to point out,Like any Broadway musical, this one will have songs, dance and glamour. This is a love story set against a 60s backdrop; so get ready to
revisit the golden era.
The cast boasts of actors
Shahana Goswami (as the seductress),Ali Fazal (of Always Kabhi Kabhi fame,as the small town guy) and Rahul Dev (as the gangster). Shahana, for one,is very excited about her glam avatar. I have always played non-glamourous roles,so this should be fun, she says.
Interestingly, the drama will unfold at Mumbais Mehboob Studios on December 11,before which Delhis Garden of Five Senses would be hosting it on November 27. Terence Lewis will choreograph, even as Ranjit Barot composes music for Fashion Broadway. As far as the outfits are concerned, the media shy designer duo David Abraham and Rakesh Thakore are creating a total of 15 outfits for the show. We dont want to reveal much but the very fact that the musical is based in the 60s,makes it quite a stylish affair, says Abraham, who looks at this as the duos first step
towards an innings in the entertainment industry.
We have not designed for Bollywood so far but we would love to do so in the future. In this case, the cast is wearing ensembles that are just an extension of what we have been doing all along,so it has turned out to be an ideal marriage, adds David.
Apart from the musical,Chivas Studio will also have an art foyer where painter and installation artist Paresh Maity would be collaborating with lensman Jatin Kampani, and an art jam, that will see American artist Brian Olsen create live art to the beats of the band Mrigya.
