1,555 farmers died by suicide during Jan-July: Vijay Wadettiwar
The LoP, Vijay Wadettiwar pointed out that districts in Marathwada have not even received more than 50 per cent of average rainfall.

Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra state legislative assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, on Thursday claimed that 1,555 farmers committed suicide in the state between January 1 and July 31, saying the situation could worsen with the onslaught of drought in Marathwada.
According to Wadettiwar, Amaravati revenue division in western Vidarbha has recorded highest farmer suicides with 637 farmers ending their lives. Marathwada’s Aurangabad division recorded 584 farmer suicides while in Nasik division (north Maharashtra) has recorded 174 farmer suicides. In East Vidarbha’s Nagpur division, 144 farmers committed suicide while western Maharashtra’s Pune division recorded 16 farmer suicides.
The LoP pointed out that districts in Marathwada have not even received more than 50 per cent of average rainfall.
As per the data, Aurangabad, Jalna and Osmanabad have received 27 per cent, 43 per cent and 32 per cent average rainfall respectively. In Beed and Parbhani, the average rainfall is 43 per cent and 31 per cent respectively.
“The highest number of farmer suicides (233) were recorded in June. The so-called triple engine government of Maharashtra has no attention towards the worsening situation of the state. The rain deficit is increasing and the government has not even announced any measures to tackle the situation,” said Wadettiwar.
