India was a pioneer in data collection some 70 years ago. It should be recalled that GDP data in the first 30- odd years was based on the consumption data collected by the NSSO. Poverty rates, and policies, were based on NSSO data.

Replying to a question on whether the SC had suggested that the government bring out a national policy to control farmers suicides, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said the court order stated an issue like this could not be dealt with overnight.

At the moment, loans taken from cooperative societies and banks are being waived for both small and marginal farmers. Loan of nationalised and commercial banks will be taken up after completing the process of the cooperative banks.

The programme started in 2015 across 14 districts that recorded a high incidence of farmer suicides. Latest data with the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) shows until February 2018, 16,968 farmers have been diagnosed depressed.

Out of the 3,515 suicide cases reported, agriculture department accepted 2,525 cases which were due to drought and crop failure, the Karnataka Agricultural Department data said.

Responding to a separate query on number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra, junior agriculture minister Parshottam Rupala said that the state has reported 855 cases of suicides during January-April of 2017, in comparison to 1,023 cases of farmers suicides in the year-ago period.
