Days after Mumbai police initiated an inquiry into a ‘fake letter’ allegedly written by eight women constable drivers, that levels serious allegations of rape, sexual harassment and corruption against a Deputy Commissioner of Police and two police inspectors of the motor vehicle department, the Maharashtra State Commission for Women on Monday took cognisance of the matter.
Officials said the women’s commission wrote to Mumbai Police Commissioner to ascertain the facts of the incident and asked that a report be submitted to the commission.
The notice issued by the commission read— “The news is being circulated through social media that 8 women police of Nagpada, Motor Transport Division of Mumbai Police, are being sexually harassed by senior policemen of their division. The Commission has taken note of it.”
It further said the matter is of “a very serious nature”, therefore an inquiry should be conducted and a detailed report be sent to the commission after verifying the truth of the matter.
While at the time of going to the press, the Mumbai police were in process of registering a case of defamation against an unknown person.
“All the eight constable drivers and the three senior police officers visited the Commissionerate office on Monday after which it was decided that they shall register a case against the person who has sent the letter to the Chief Minister and other senior officials from the department,” said an officer.
One of the female constable drivers subsequently went to Nagpada police station, where the process of recording her statement was going on (till the time of going to the press), said an official.
The police further added that they shall check the CCTV footage of the speed post office in matunga that shall help them in identifying the culprit.
