To ensure that the information necessary to identify the perpetrators behind the ‘offensive’ Facebook post that sparked off protests in the state is obtained as soon as possible, the Mumbai police crime branch is also preparing a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) letter in addition to its Letters Rogatory (LR).
MLAT letters and LRs are diplomatic tools used by the police when an investigation extends across borders and are sent through the respective governments of the countries involved. The crime branch is drafting an LR in order to gain information about the IP addresses and email ids used to create the Facebook accounts that posted the offensive content.
“We are drafting an MLAT letter. It should be sent soon,” said DCP (Detection) Satyanarayan Chaudhary.
