Fabrication work of Andheri’s Gokhale Bridge likely to be delayed by a month
The new bridge is going to be a fabricated structure made of steel. This structure is being constructed and assembled at an workshop in Ambala and after the assembling is done, the girders will be brought to Mumbai, set up and launched.

Fabrication work of the new Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge, which is being done in Ambala, is likely to be delayed by a month following the floods in north India. Floodwaters have also entered the workshop in Ambala, where the fabricated steel structure of the new bridge is being constructed and assembled.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) awarded work for construction of the new bridge to Mumbai-based AB Infrabuild Ltd. The contractor has given the fabrication work to Ambala-based HMM Infra Ltd. Sources in the civic body said AB Infrabuild has informed the civic body that HMM Infra’s Ambala workshop has been heavily affected in the rain and subsequent floods.
“There has been severe waterlogging in Ambala where the workshop is located due to which there could be a delay by a month,” P Velrasu, additional municipal commissioner (projects), told The Indian Express on Monday.
Meanwhile, in a letter to AB Infrabuild, HMM Infra has said it might take nearly 15 days for the situation to become normal. According to HMM Infra , so far fabrication work for up to 500 metres of the nearly 1-km-long girder has been completed.
“We have faced heavy rainfall across Haryana and Punjab state, due to which heavy waterlogging of up to two and half feet has been recorded in our workshop. The entire production work has been stopped and it will take approximately 15 days to return to normal. We are trying to resolve the issue and we will intimate soon after the fabrication work resumes,” the letter sent by HMM Infra to AB Infrabuild on July 11 stated.

The cost of the new bridge has been pegged at Rs 90 crore and it will have six lanes for smooth vehicular movement. The Gokhale Bridge was shut in November 2022 after the traffic department of the Mumbai Police urged the civic body to shut it down citing poor structural health.
