Two constables were arrested by the Dindoshi police early on Wednesday for allegedly helping Sub-Inspector Prashant Mane extort cash and ornaments from a Malad businessman. Constables S Laad and Chauhan, attached to the Sewree police station, were arrested while they were on duty.
Mane was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly extorting ornaments worth Rs 17 lakh and cash totalling Rs 7 lakh from the businessman. The two constables were nabbed after one of the accused revealed their names.
We have arrested the two constables who accompanied Mane to threaten the complainant Mohammed Asif Shaikh and extort ornaments and cash from him. We had detained the constables, but later arrested them when their role became clear, said Sopan Chaudhury from the Dindoshi police station.
The Mumbai Police Crime Branch had on Monday arrested men posing as police officers Akbar Shaikh (36),Abhishek (34) and their informer Salman Khan (22). They along with Mane allegedly approached Shaikh and threatened to arrest him if he did not give them money.
Salman, who was related to Shaikh, had told Akbar and Abhishek that Shaikh had huge dealings and would easily fall into their trap, said Chaudhury. Mane, who was in touch with Abhishek, learnt about the plan and decided to join in to earn quick money.
According to Chaudhury, the police will now probe whether Mane, the two fake policemen and the two constables have been involved in other extortion cases.
