Computer Science continues to remain the most popular branch of engineering in Maharashtra with great preference for allied new-age technology courses such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning and Cyber Security. Whereas traditional core engineering branches such as mechanical and civil engineering have witnessed almost 50 percent of vacancy this academic year.
Engineering admissions in the state have already witnessed a record-breaking number with more than 1.17lakh confirming their seats. As engineering admissions concluded in state, branch-wise data shared by the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell, shows students’ preferences.
Out of a total of 49,586 seats in computer engineering courses including those offering new-age technology such AI, ML and IoT, 44,517 seats are filled. Whereas in super specialised courses offering AI-ML and AI-Data Science, 8,514 out of 9,642 seats in total have been filled at the end of the admission season this year.
On the contrary, according to the data, there were a total of 23,193 seats in Mechanical Engineering courses, but only 12,065 candidates took admission. While Mechanical Engineering has recorded vacancy of almost 50 per cent; the civil engineering branch has recorded over 50 per cent vacancy this year. In Civil Engineering, the intake capacity this year was 17,268 seats. But only 7,103 took admission. Allied courses of civil engineering such as Civil and Environmental Engineering, Civil and Infrastructural Engineering, Civil Engineering and Planning also recorded very low admissions. Out of a combined intake of 341 seats, only 104 seats were filled.
Other traditional engineering branches however have experienced a better flow of admissions. In Electronics and Telecommunication 15,229 out of 18,806 total seats were filled. Whereas in Information Technology (IT), out of total intake of 12,359 seats 11,565 students confirmed admissions. In Electrical Engineering, 7,152 out of 11,760 total seats were filled.
Overall, out of a total of 1,58,585 seats available under various engineering branches, 1,17,585 students confirmed admissions for the academic year 2023-24. While this is much higher than only 1,09,499 admissions in the academic year 2022-23, a little over 25 percent of seats remain vacant in engineering courses this academic year.
