(Express File Photo by Pradip Das)The Bombay High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) seeking its response to a plea by academician and Dalit rights activist Anand Teltumbde, an accused in Elgaar Parishad case, seeking permission to travel abroad for academic purposes.
The HC, in November, 2022. had granted bail to Teltumbde and subsequently the Supreme Court had upheld the HC order. As he was asked not to leave the jurisdiction of a special NIA court in Mumbai and was directed to deposit his passport, he approached the HC to modify travel restrictions.
A division bench of Justices Ajey S Gadkari and Kamal R Khata was hearing Teltumbde’s application stating that faculty of humanities, University of Amsterdam selected him as a visiting scholar citing his “internationally renowned scholarship and expertise in the area of social justice”.
The application stated that Teltumbde is a “leading authority on Dr. B R Ambedkar, Dalit movement, caste, public policy and democratic rights”.
He sought to attend a four-week programme that includes seminars, delivering lecture on Ambedkar on April 14 and conducting master classes with Ph.D candidates, post-graduate teachings and also consists of meetings with scholars and faculty.
Moreover, the application claimed that Teltumbde has been invited by Leiden Institute for Asia Studies, Leiden University, Netherlands to deliver a lecture on April 16.
He said that Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom (UK) has invited him as ‘Scholar-in-Residence’ for the first two weeks in May. Moreover, there are invitations by the University of Oxford and two other universities in the UK.
The HC issued notice to NIA and posted further hearing after two weeks.
