Eastern Freeway finally gets eight CCTV cameras

The move comes a month after a road accident.

Over two years after its inauguration and several accidents later — many of them fatal — eight CCTV cameras have finally been set up on the Eastern Freeway and will be operational next week.

The move comes a month after a road accident involving advocate Janhavi Gadkar (35), who is accused of killing two people and injuring four others on June 9. Gadkar allegedly rammed her Audi car into a taxi in an inebriated state, while driving on the wrong side of the Eastern Freeway.

With no electronic surveillance on the 16.8-km stretch to assist the police in determining how Gadkar got on the wrong side of the freeway, officers were forced to conduct “demo runs” to recreate the accident as part of the investigation. The police said Gadkar had no recollection of the exact path she took before she got on the wrong side of the southbound carriageway.

“It will be an indicative move to have CCTV cameras on the Eastern Freeway. We also have other ideas to curb traffic violators — especially those who speed on the stretch,” said Milind Bharambe, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

Traffic police officers have said some key projects are set to roll out by next month to track speedsters on the freeway.

“There are eight cameras that were set up 10 days ago and will be operational by next week. We will receive the footage and so will traffic police headquarters,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner SVR Srinivas.

Officials said the two cameras have been installed on the P D’Mello Road on the Orange Gate end at the entrance and exit of the Eastern Freeway and one each at the Reay Road exit, the Cotton Green Crossing, Wadala Mumbai Port Trust Colony Crossing, the Mahul-MbPT exit, the Bhakti Park exit and near Panjrapol Junction in Chembur.
