The current dry spell in the city will continue for another two days, said the Met department on Sunday. After heavy rainfall from 8.30 pm on Monday to 8.30 am on Tuesday with the Santacruz station recording 88 mm rainfall and Colaba recording 52 mm,the city has mostly received light rain. In the five days from 8.30 am on Tuesday to 8.30 am on Sunday,Colaba received a total of 52.9 mm rainfall while Santacruz received even lesser with 46.2 mm. Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Sunday,Colaba did not record any rainfall while Santacruz recorded immeasurable rain.
Weathermen attribute the dry period to lack of conditions favourable to rain. There is no significant weather system over the Arabian Sea right now which can bring good rain to our region. That is why we have seen rainfall on the lower side in the past few days, said Ajay Kumar, director of weather forecast,India Meteorological Department(IMD).
Meanwhile, the rain deficit in the city has dropped significantly due to the good spell in September. In the suburbs, which are considered indicative of the city, the deficit now is only seven percent which at its peak was around 40 per cent. However, the rain deficit for the island city is still 30 percent. Santacruz has now recorded 1789.7 mm rain since the beginning of the monsoon season in June while Colaba has recorded 1410.5 mm.
Also, the withdrawal of the south-west monsoon is delayed which could be good news as the city could get rain till as late as October and cover up its deficit. The withdrawal of the south-west monsoon generally begins by September 1 from the north of the country and reaches the west coast by around September 15. However, this season,we are not expecting the withdrawal from the north to begin before September 21, said Kumar.
A few spells of rain are expected in the city and suburbs on Monday. We do not expect any significant rainfall. There will only be light rain, said Kumar.
