The Shahu Nagar Police arrested one person early on Thursday in connection with the murder of 24-year-old Hasan Shaikh on Wednesday.

The Shahu Nagar Police arrested one person early on Thursday in connection with the murder of 24-year-old Hasan Shaikh on Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Girish Nair (27),a resident of Dharavi.

Officers probing the incident said Nair has confessed to killing Shaikh. “Nair told us he had an enmity with Shaikh. He has alleged that Shaikh had threatened him on a few occasions and they had several fights too. According to what he told us,they fought again early on Wednesday. When the fight escalated,he attacked Shaikh and killed him,” said Police Inspector Gajanand Desurkar of Shahu Nagar police station.

Although the police had earlier said no eyewitnesses had come forward, they claimed an informer had told them that Nair was responsible for the murder.

“We kept a tab on him after we got the information. We picked him up after we got proof of him meeting Shaikh. We arrested him and he has confessed to the crime,” said Desurkar.

The murder weapon has not yet been recovered by the police. “We are trying to recover the weapon. Our investigations are on,” said Desurkar.

Nair was produced in court on Thursday. He has been sent in police custody till October 18.
