Devendra Jagtap, who attacked gangster Abu Salem with a revolver in Taloja Central Jail on June 27,has reportedly told his interrogators he frequently changed places where he kept the weapon in his cell to escape being caught.

Jagtap was allegedly given the country-made revolver by co-accused Manoj Lahmane in May. Police said Lahmane tossed the gun over the compound wall of the prison, met Jagtap the same day,and told him where to find it.

The weapon was in Jagtap’s possession for nearly two months.

“Jagtap would keep changing the gun’s location at night. While fellow inmates would not care about a smuggled cellphone,a gun would have sparked panic, spoiling his plan,” said a police officer.

Meanwhile, police are interrogating Lahmane. He reportedly acted as a middleman between Jagtap and gangster Chhota Shakeel, who allegedly ordered the attack.

“Days before the attack,Jagtap spoke to Shakeel. They decided terms of the hit. Later,Jagtap destroyed and disposed of the cellphone,” said the officer.
