The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is constructing Mumbai’s first twin tunnels at the footsteps of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)-mountain.

The twin tunnels, which are part of four-lane Eastern Freeway Project (EFW),will stretch between Ashok Nagar at the footsteps of BARC Mountain and Gautam Nagar, near Panjarpole.

According to Metropolitan Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad, the twin tunnels are around 500 metres in length each— with 17 metre in width and 10 metre in height. Each tunnel will have four carriageways.

“I visited the spot last week and over 60 metres has been excavated. The work is going on at good pace and we want to finish it by October. The second phase will link the Anik-Panjrapole link road with Ghatkopar suburb, affording easy access and time saving to the people living in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai”,said Gaikwad.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 221 crore and is being done after acquiring the land from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd and BARC.

The tunnel is a vital connect and a major part of the Mumbai urban infrastructure project, once completed, the 21-km-long Eastern Freeway Project will drastically reduce travel time between South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs like Ghatkopar and Mulund. It will also include a sub-road adjacent to the existing Mumbai Port Trust road to enable quick movement of heavy vehicles that converges to the wholesale markets and trading areas in the southern parts of the city.
