Ashok Devadiga was presented before a special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court Saturday and remanded in police custody till August 16.
Devadiga was wanted by Mumbai Police for allegedly making extortion calls to a Govandi-based businessman. Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) officers said the complainant had in 2011 received a call from a person identifying himself as ‘Anil, who had demanded protection money of Rs 50 lakh from him.
The caller also gave the complainant an international mobile number used by fugitive gangster Pujari. However, the complainant did not take the call seriously. Early last year, when the extortion calls became frequent, the complainant approached Govandi police and registered an FIR against Anil.
AEC officers arrested two of Devadigas accomplices, identified as Pawan alias Rahul alias Rajesh Yamnadas Sahani and Prasad Shetty alias Vitthala. An Interpol Red Corner Notice was issued against Devadiga.
In February,Interpol informed Mumbai Police that Devadiga had been detained at Dubai international Airport and his passport had been seized.
