Madhavashram is probably the only eating joint in city offering authentic homemade modaks during Ganeshotsav
This Maharashtrian hotel is straight out of an RK Narayan novelancient wooden tables,a slowly revolving fan,an aura of old world charm and an aged genial host. Nestled in a quiet corner of Girgaum,Madhavashram has two claims to fame. This khanavali as it is popularly called is not only the oldest in the city but is perhaps the only eating joint in Mumbai that offers authentic home-made modaks with meals during the Ganeshotsav.
Tracing roots of the hotel, owner Ramesh Mahajan says,This hotel was opened in 1908 by my uncle Dhondu Savle, who had come from Konkan to Mumbai seeking a livelihood. At the time,we had opened only a small place for serving meals and my uncle then had employed widows for cooking the food as they had no other means of livelihood those days. After a few years, the family opened up own lodging house too here.
Over the years, our lodging house has developed a group of clientèle. The lodging house is specially favoured by families who come to Mumbai from remote areas like Sawantwadi,Khandesh,Kolhapur etc for the authentic food and accommodation.
During Ganesh Chathurthi,Madhavashram enjoys a special status as it is the only eating joint in the city that provides authentic handmade modaks, the favourite food of the Elephant God. The idea of serving modaks during Ganesh Chathurthi came into being during the festival seasons years ago; people, who used to eat meals from our hotel, would ask me about the nearest place that serves modaks and I would direct them. However, later we decided to make modaks so that our customers can enjoy them with their meals. Since 1995,we have been serving the popular sweet with meals. Mahajan has a group of eight cooks to prepare the delicacy. Madhavashram boasts of serving as many as 2000 modaks every year during Ganpati festival.
