Day after alert,helpline keeps ringing

A day after the Mumbai Police sounded a high alert that four Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists had sneaked into the city in the past few days.

A day after the Mumbai Police sounded a high alert that four Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists had sneaked into the city in the past few days and were planning to carry out attacks during the Christmas and New Year festive season, calls started pouring in on Friday on the dedicated helpline set up for tip-offs.

According to the police,as many as 23 calls were received on the hotline number 2263-3333 from citizens stating that they had spotted Walid Jinnah, the only “terrorist” whose sketch was released by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Thursday evening.

“Citizens from across the city have been calling the helpline and police control room claiming that they have spotted Jinnah in their locality. Since we cannot leave anything to chance,we have to check out all possible leads before discarding them. So far, nothing concrete has come up from the information provided by these callers,” said a Crime Branch officer.

“Among the many calls received today, one caller had claimed that he had spotted Jinnah near the Bandra Worli Sea Link. The information was immediately followed up,but it proved to be a wild goose chase,” said the officer.

Meanwhile, the police have instensified security drills and started checking hotels and lodges in the city for suspicious elements. All units of the Crime Branch have been given instructions to conduct searches in their respective areas of jurisdiction. Security has been beefed up at sensitive spots across the city, with special focus on Colaba.

According to the Crime Branch, the four terrorists have been identified as Walid Jinnah,Abdul Kareem Moosa,Noor Abu Ilahi and Mehfooz Alam. They are believed to be aged between 20 and 30.
