A new weekly event in Bandra aims to support art and music.

In the last couple of years, various specially curated nights and events have contributed in a big way to the burgeoning independent music scene in the country. Beginning this evening,Yellow Tree Cafe in Bandra will host a new weekly night whose primary aim will be to further the cause of art, music and culture in the city.

Put together by a group of artistes, promoters and writers, the initiative, called District Fifty, has been set up in collaboration with Yellow Tree Foundation,a non-profit organisation that supports NGOs for underprivileged children. A part of the profits will go to the foundation.

“The most important idea of the event is to make art, culture and music accessible to everyone,” says Gunjan Bakshi, marketing head,District Fifty. The name of the venture comes from the pin code of the suburb they’ve chosen for it.

This inaugural edition, however, will feature two DJs — Kris Correya and Yohann Jamsandekar, better known as SpaceJams — and video mapping on the first and second floors of the venue. “In the future,we may have light and art shows, and book sales,” says Bakshi. “We’ll develop the concept further as time passes, have more art and culture events and make it a mix of a networking space.”

The organisers say they’ll have a variety of DJs from around the country and elsewhere playing, but live acts are also an option. “We’re open to presenting live acts and we’ll begin to incorporate more events depending on the kind of people and response we get,” says Bakshi.

They will,in addition, utilise the entire three-floors space of the venue. The second floor will serve as a lounge and dance area while the first and ground floors will be a space for networking. Entry to this weekly event is free.

District Fifty, however, will not only be restricted to a weekly night of events. The organisers also plan to launch an international music label by the end of April,District Fifty Grooves. Musicians have already begun sending in contributions, the organisers say, making it a reality, and in time, the label will expand to include international electronica artistes, too.
