The state government on Thursday asked the Mumbai Police Crime Branch to probe the alleged suicide of Tata Steels head of corporate communications Charudatta Deshpande last month. The Crime Branch has initiated a parallel probe into the incident.
The body of Deshpande,a former journalist, was found hanging in his residence on June 28. No suicide note was found in the house though some of his friends and colleagues alleged that he was being harassed.
On Thursday,a delegation of Press Club members, including journalists Kumar Ketkar,Ayaz Memon and Charles Assisi met Home Minister R R Patil and submitted a letter about the incident.
The Press Club in its letter to Mr R R Patil has demanded that the inquiry into Charus death should not be closed as a case of accidental death but must be probed deeply as there was sufficient prima facie evidence that he had been threatened by various Tata Steel officials and had been kept under house arrest in the days prior to the incident. The delegation also demanded that the investigation be moved out from Vasai Police Station to a more competent agency like the DCB – CID or the State CID department, said a release issued by the Press Club.
Patil subsequently spoke to Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy and instructed the Crime Branch to investigate the incident.
I have asked the Crime Branch to probe the matter. The state Government has taken serious note of the incident, said Patil. When contacted,Roy confirmed the development, saying,We are conducting a parallel probe into the matter.
