A ‘happiness’ survey conducted among students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),Bombay, indicates that the country’s future engineers may not be ‘very happy’. Over 200 students on campus were given the ‘Oxford happiness questionnaire’,developed by psychologists Michael Argyle and Peter Hills at Oxford University,as a compact scale for measurement of psychological well-being.

“The survey is used to determine the level of happiness… Though no survey is without inherent harms and biases, the Oxford happiness questionnaire has been shown to be the most accurate measure of happiness currently available. The average individual usually receives a score of 4.3 and people with scores below that are adjudged as unhappy than average and those with scores above it are adjudged happy,” says the paper on the poll results, which has been published in the IIT Bombay student newsletter,Insight.

According to the survey results, the average score was 3.43. The female students scored slightly higher than their male counterparts, with an average score of 3.44 versus 3.34.

“The inferences one can draw from these statistics could be many, ranging from academic pressure to an inability to cope with extra-curricular activities. It is important that these inferences are looked into in the future,” says the paper.

In the department-wise analysis, students from Computer Science and Engineering (3.27) and Electrical Engineering (3.29) have considerably higher scores than other departments.

Departments with scales on the higher side include Aerospace (3.76),Civil (3.67) and Energy Science and Engineering (3.64). The other departments have average scores like 3.49 for Metallurgical and 3.45 for Mechanical Engineering.

“The primary aim of this survey was to find out the general well-being of the students. We wanted to bring to the attention of the authorities that the statistics indicate a less-than favourable picture of the general happiness of the student body and that initiatives must be taken by the community as a whole. The survey was done with over 200 students but not everyone,so the results should also be taken with a pinch of salt,” said Saideep Sudi, student and editor of Insight.

Findings reveal that the happiness quotient was the highest among third year (3.56) students and lowest among second year students (3.21).

While first year students scored 3.41,the scores of fourth and fifth year students were 3.44 and 3.49 respectively.
