Two days after Congress corporator Praful Patil (51) was shot by two unidentified assailants, the Navghar police have registered a case of murder against four persons. Police said they had not arrested anybody in the case and were conducting further enquiries.

The four suspects have been identified as Chandrakant Mhatre, his son Vishal Mhatre,Milan Patil and Yashwant Patil. Chandrakant Mhatre is the brother of Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Mayor Tulsidas Mhatre.

Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Mohite said,“After conducting enquiries,we have narrowed down on four people who were suspected to be behind the attack on Patil. We have named them in the First Information Report (FIR).”

Patil’s family alleged that the four had some land disputes with Patil and they had accused Patil of land grabbing. Patil was the president of the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Council in 1997 and was serving his fourth term as a corporator.

Praful Patil was murdered on Saturday morning while he was taking his daily morning walk at an educational complex in Bhayander (E). Patil, who was also the trustee of the educational complex, had come there to check the progress of some construction on the premises. He was stabbed over 20 times and shot in the back by two assailants using a 9 mm pistol.

Patil was rushed to the Tunga Hospital in Bhayander and was declared brought dead. Police said the attack on Patil was well-planned. The assailants knew the lay of the land and also the avenues to escape from the spot soon after the assault, police said.
