In what the Mumbai police claimed as a major breakthrough,a local police team arrested two persons in the Charkop bank robbery case. Police said the arrested duo was involved in two earlier bank robberies in the city since June.
We have arrested Sonu Kumar Gorakh (25) and Brahmanjeet Ramnarayan Dubey (36) from Borivali and Kandivli. Investigations have revealed that the two were also involved in the bank robberies at Malad and Borivali in June and August, said a senior police officer who did not want to be named. We are trying to ascertain the whereabouts of the other gang members.
On Monday,three persons had robbed the Saraswat Banks Charkop branch at gunpoint taking away cash amounting Rs 20.74 lakh. The robbery was the third in the north-western suburbs of the city in the past few months,and it took the total amount robbed to Rs 80 lakh.
On June 2,four armed men had looted cash worth Rs 31 lakh from Model Cooperative Bank in Malad,followed by another robbery by five people at the HDFC bank near Shimpoli Naka in Borivali. All the three bank robberies occurred on a Monday. Sources also said that the arrested duo was not from Mumbai and investigations were on to ascertain the whereabouts of their associate. The robberies had raised questions about police investigations,especially after two unsolved cases being followed swiftly by a third robbery.
