Cop shoots himself dead with service revolver in Nashik police station

The police identified the deceased as Ashok Najan and said there was no clarity on the reason behind the suicide.

A 47-year-old police inspector shot himself dead with his service revolver inside his cabin at the Ambad police station in Nashik on Tuesday morning, officials said.

The police identified the deceased as Ashok Najan and said there was no clarity on the reason behind the suicide.

ACP Shekhar Deshmukh said that Najan was present during the Shiv Jayanti bandobast till late the previous night. He came to the police station on Tuesday morning around 9.15am.
Later, when a constable marking attendance went to his cabin, he found Najan slumped in his chair with a gun shot wound on his head. Deshmukh said no suicide note was found.

The police said a woman officer was sent to his residence to inform the deceased’s family members about the incident. Najan is survived by his mother, wife and a son. He had not told anyone at the police station if he was under stress, Deshmukh said.

Najan, a 1997 batch officer, who hailed from Sambhajinagar, was posted at the Ambad police station since July last year. The police will record statements of his colleagues and family members to clarify the exact reason behind the step.

Soon after his death, senior officers, including Commissioner Sandeep Karnik and local deputy commissioners of police, rushed to the police station.

An officer said when Najan appeared for duty on Tuesday, he did not exhibit any external signs of being under stress.
