In what officials claim to be a first in Mumbai,a senior police officer attached to the department of the Protection of Civil Rights department of the Mumbai Police was arrested on Tuesday by the Anti Narcotics Cell (Worli unit) on charges of allegedly smuggling brown sugar worth Rs 15 lakh from Bhopal.
An official from the ANC unit said,Our officials got a tip-off that Ashok Dhawle (53),who is attached to the Protection of Civil Rights department as a deputy superintendent of police, was smuggling in brown sugar in an official police vehicle. We laid a trap at Worli and intercepted the vehicle. On searching Dhawle and his companion, one Amar Singh alias Munna (45),we discovered packets of brown sugar worth around Rs 15 lakh.
Police sources also claimed Dhawle had been shunted to the department, which is rumoured to be a side posting, after his name cropped up in an alcohol smuggling racket around two years ago.
The two have been arrested and charged under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and will be produced in court at the earliest for seeking police custody as we need to conduct inquiries to trace other members of the gang who might be involved in smuggling drugs in the city for selling them, added the official.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Himanshu Roy said,We have found that Dhawle was going to hand over the drugs to a woman involved in drug peddling. We have identified her and are in the process of tracing her.
