A constable caught people by surprise at the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s sabha at Azad Maidan on Tuesday afternoon, when he got onto the dais and handed over a yellow rose to MNS president Raj Thackeray as a sign of support.

Constable Pramod Tawde, attached to the Byculla unit of the wireless department, climbed onto the stage when Thackeray had finished his speech and was about to walk away. Police sources said Tawde was likely to face departmental action.

Tawde said,“Mumbai Police is probably the only workforce in the city that is not backed by a union. There have been instances of attacks on police personnel in the past but all the criminal proceedings against the culprits remain on paper. I would like to thank Raj Thackeray for making the police force feel that there is someone who thinks about our welfare and is standing up for us.” He said he was aware of the consequences that he is likely to face. “When I urged Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik to take action against those responsible for beating up constables on August 11,he laughed it off, saying I looked like Subhash Chandra Bose,” he alleged.

Tawde continued with his anti-police tirade for about 15 minutes before police personnel escorted him out. Senior officers said the police were probing Tawde’s outburst. “We will have to check what he said,” said Patnaik.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Ravindra Shisve said the police were recording Tawde’s statement. He denied that Tawde had been detained. “We have also informed his family,” said Shisve.

In August 2010,Tawde and three other constables were allegedly assaulted by about 10 personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Then posted in the traffic department,Tawde had allegedly stopped a vehicle near Orange Gate of Mumbai Port Trust. When he refused,he was allegedly assaulted by CISF personnel and locked up in a room. Sources said Tawde had then approached his seniors, but felt disgruntled when the 10 persons had got anticipatory bail.

“Tawde had become anxious after the incident. He was sent to JJ Hospital, and later to KEM for psychiatric help,” said DCP (Wireless) B M Yadav.
