When Malini Vachani-Akerkar launched her furniture design and lifestyle store Pallate in 2005,it not only made a splash for its high celebrity quotient but also for remaining true to the vision of introducing and supporting new talent in furniture design through the offshoot Pallate Design Studio. The store had found its space.
But over the last five years,Pallate has overshot the original vision, confesses Akerkar of the store, which will now showcase photographer Shahid Datawalas latest furniture line along with that of newbie designer Priyanka Gala. My vision for Pallate was to be able to provide excellent designs for living spaces and promote Indian furniture designers. But now,we have a small panel of architects and designers on board and collaborate with renowned architects and interior designers to furnish hotels and stores. The Volkswagon store has been done by us. We are also ready to launch the Pallate stores in Pune and Hyderabad, she explains.
Datawala, who moved from Delhi to Mumbai to head the Pallate Design Studio, refers to his latest collection as inspired from daily mundane things. The Indian market until recently was not prepared for very contemporary designs. But I have been getting more and more outrageous and playful with every new collection I design. The recent one has pieces that take inspiration from things like poached eggs,an orange or the alien look, says the designer of his collection.
Gala on the other hand, says Akerkar,is a fresh talent she saw potential in. But at the same time,we continue to have a repertoire of reputed European as well Indian designers like Abraham & Thakore with us.
With expansion plans in mind,Akerkars vision for the store too has gone a step further. I want to do for furniture what my husband (Rahul Akerkar) did for food with Indigo resturants. Furniture design in India is at a very nascent stage still. There is a general lack of awareness and an average Indian still needs a stylist, architect or interior designer to pick up furniture. I want Pallate to be at the forefront of creating awareness about furniture design.
