Civic ‘guardians’ for roads

BMC will assign roads to civic engineers for upkeep and maintenance in a bid to hold civic officials accountable for the condition of roads.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will assign roads to civic engineers for upkeep and maintenance in a bid to hold civic officials accountable for the condition of roads.

For the new road works expected to begin in October,the BMC will assign two-three roads to a specific engineer who will oversee the road repair work,digging permissions and inter-agency communication.

“The move is aimed at making the civic officials more responsible. They can act as guardians of the roads,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Aseem Gupta.

The contracts for asphalting and concretisation of over 150 roads is expected to start in the first week of October. The Rs 579-crore project,including Rs 29 crore for underground shifting,has been done through nine contracts,of which six are for asphalt roads and three for cement concrete roads.
