Civic body nod to web-based parking system

After deferring the proposal last week, the BMC statutory standing committee decided Thursday to adopt a web-based technique to check malpractices in pay and park.

After deferring the proposal last week, the BMC statutory standing committee decided Thursday to adopt a web-based technique to check malpractices in pay and park. The decision was taken despite opposition by corporators.

The civic body has proposed to purchase 600 hand-held devices for an estimated Rs 6.84 lakh that will generate printed receipts for using civic parking lots. The data will be then transferred to the central BMC server. The system also has an option for motorists to book parking slots online. An attendant will key in all details of a vehicle — its make, number, area and time of parking. When a vehicle exits a lot,the attendant will generate a receipt and charge the motorist based on parking time.

Corporators are opposed to the web-based system. They claim it has loopholes,it is hi-tech and in case of failure, the expenditure would be waste.

“In case the online booking system turns faulty,it will be waste of public fund. Also, why should BMC incur such liability? Instead, this should be added in tender conditions,” said Asif Zakaria of Congress.

The new system aims to prevent overcharging by contractors. “By linking the system to the BMC server,we will be able to track movement of vehicles in the city.

“This will help in case of terror threats or vehicle thefts,” said additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta.
