City wakes up to light showers

Parts of the city experienced unseasonal light showers on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning following a dip in the mercury in northern India and heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir.

Along with falling temperatures over the past week, the city also experienced light showers and a cloudy,over-cast sky for the rest of the day on Wednesday. The Regional Meteorological Center of Mumbai,a branch of the Indian Meteorological Department, however, announced that the phenomenon is temporary and likely to continue only till Thursday early morning at the most. The minimum temperature however is likely to fall to about 18 °C on Thursday.

IMD officials said that drizzle in February is unusual for the city. IMD meteorologist Ajay Kumar said that a temporary low pressure area over east Rajasthan had caused the cold winds from northern India to blow southwestwards towards Rajasthan and Arabian Sea and finally over Mumbai.

“The western disturbance is much stronger this year because of this low pressure area. The cold winds, while blowing over the Arabian Sea,are gathering moisture thus leading to light showers and slight dip in temperatures in the city. This is not expected to last beyond 24 hours,” said Kumar.

He added that the skies will continue to be overcast for the next 24 hours. The Valley has experienced heavy snowfall with temperatures dipping to 0.01°C on Tuesday.
