Imran Shehzad had been arrested for attack on CRPF camp in Rampur

The Mumbai crime branch on Thursday took custody of Imran Shehzad,an alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba operative arrested on December 31for the attack on a CRPF camp in Rampur.

The crime branch is investigating Shehzad’s possible links to the November 26 attack. He was brought from UP to Mumbai on Wednesday evening and produced before a metropolitan magistrate who sent him to police custody.

Two other accused,Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin Ahmed, had been brought to Mumbai earlier and are in police custody till January 12. They are being grilled over the firing at CST.

Crime branch sources said Ansari,Ahmed and Shehzad had undergone arms training in LeT camps in Pakistan. The prosecution alleged that Ansari and Sabauddin had conducted a recce of the city ahead of the attack and submitted information about prospective targets to other LeT operatives.

Public prosecutor Eknath Dhumal argued that Shehzad aided the recce. “We suspect Imran had aided the duo in conducting the recce. We also need to further probe if Shehzad’s involvement went beyond aiding the recce or if he was aware of other terror plots,” Dhumal said.

Shehzad, asked by the magistrate to inform the court if he had any complaints against the police, said he was not involved in the Mumbai strikes. He requested that he be provided legal aid.
