Citizens’ group to soon form panels to highlight issues concerning education system in city

These committees will come up with suggestions on the new education policies introduced by the government.

Parents, activists and educationists from the city will form committees to put forth to the government, all those issues that concern the education system. These committees will come up with suggestions on the new education policies introduced by the government.

A group of parents, teachers and activists, under the banner of Forum for Fairness in Education, met on Tuesday evening to discuss various issues related to education. Admission regulations, fee regulations, capitation fee, exploitation of teachers, uniformity in syllabus across boards, pre-primary regulation and the implementation of the Right to Education act were some of the issues discussed.

The forum will set up committees to address the issues as a group in order to bring out viable solutions and present it to the government for the new education policy. “These issues cannot be resolved individually as most people fear backlash from school managements and government authorities. People should get together and fight these problems and that is what we aim at doing by forming committees on various issues,” said Jitendra Shah, Vice president of FFE. “Many parents do not come forward openly due to this fear hence We are looking at ways on how anonymous complaints reach out to correct authorities,” he added.

Teachers’ problems will also be a part of committees.

“Exploitation of teachers by schools and government is not addressed by anyone. There are no laws that protect teachers. Teachers are underpaid and are working overtime but there are no forums to ease their burdens. So we have decided to work jointly with FFE to address these issues,” said Arun Saxena, president of the International Consumer Rights Council.

Other experts who participated in the panel discussion were spokesperson of Shiv Sena, Manisha Kayande, Vithal Wankhede, former deputy director of school education.
