A chain-snatcher arrested by MHB Colony police allegedly attempted suicide inside a lock-up in Borivali west by slashing his neck with a broken tube light on Monday. The accused had been remanded in judicial custody by Borivali magistrate court and was about to be taken to a hospital for check-up,police said.
Mohammad Aslam Qureshi (25) swallowed some pieces of the broken tubelight,police said. He was shifted to JJ Hospital on Wednesday and his condition is reportedly stable.
Qureshi,a resident of Shivaji Nagar,Dahisar (East),was arrested on April 5 from Bhiwandi in a chain-snatching case.
Police officers said that at around 3 pm on Monday,he pulled out a tubelight in the lock-up and broke it into pieces. He allegedly tried to cut his neck and both hands. A constable raised an alarm and Qureshi was taken to Bhagwati Hospital.
Inspector Ravi Adane of Borivali police station said,Qureshi was booked under IPC section 309 (Attempt to commit suicide) and we will get his custody after he is discharged from hospital.
Police said on around 4.30 pm on April 4,Daisy Dsouza (63) was walking on the footpath opposite St. Francis Ground at Dahisar (West). Qureshi allegedly snatched her chain. He allegedly fled in a waiting autorickshaw. Dsouza noted its licence plate number and alerted police.
Qureshi was detained from Bhiwandi around 1 am the next day.
Sub-inspector Raviraj Jadhav of MHB Colony police station said,Four chain-snatching cases are registered against him. We recovered the chain stolen from the senior citizen.
