Around 50 labourers have been deployed to remove the boulders and muck from the site. The boulders are being fragmented by compressor breaker machines. The Central Railway (CR) Sunday started the process of removing boulders between Monkey Hill and Thakurwadi on the Lonavala-Karjat section, said a railway official. Heavy rainfall triggered a landslide along the section on June 30 night but a major mishap was averted owing to the presence of a rockfall barrier wall, he added.
As per the CR official, the landslide had occurred from a height of 100 meters from the rail level and approximately 80-90 boulders and muck fell, which were trapped by Rockfall barriers. The barriers have been constructed at a height of 60 meters from rail level on hill cuttings. Boulders up to 2.5 meters in size got trapped in the barrier wall.
“Whole masses of muck and boulders are hanging on the hill-cutting slope. All were held firmly by Rockfall barriers. If Rockfall barriers were not there, then all these boulders would have landed on the tracks posing danger for passing trains,” said a CR public relation official.

As per the CR, rockfall barriers and wall fencing were put up in both Karjat and Kasara ghats as a part of monsoon preparations. In both Karjat and Kasara ghats, the Central Railway has installed such rockfall barriers at several locations. Boulder netting of around 550 square meters has been put up at sensitive locations. Around 160 meters of hill-cutting bank stabilisation was also carried out at vulnerable locations.
