The Home Department has finalised the Request for Proposal (RFP) for the ambitious CCTV network for Mumbai on Friday and is set to issue the same to the shortlisted bidders on Monday. Once the process is completed, the department hopes to issue work orders by the month-end.
It was the last meeting of the technical committee appointed to finalise the project details. We should be able to issue work orders by the month-end, said a senior official.
The Home Department is planning to set up a three-tier CCTV system in Mumbai. The CCTVs will be monitored by each police station and links will be established with the regional and main control room. There are plans to set up five regional control rooms and the main control room at the new building coming up at the police headquarters.
In the first phase,1,200 CCTV cameras will be installed. The number will be eventually scaled up to 5,000.
The plan to install a CCTV network was first floated after the 26/11 terror attacks and was revived after the 13/7 blasts last year. A team of senior Home Department and police officers, led by Home Minister RR Patil, had visited London in October to study the surveillance system there.
The government has received 10 bidders for its tender issued last year and selected qualified bidders who will be sent the RFP. The department is also considering setting up a separate cadre of policemen trained to handle the cameras and control rooms.
