App-based cab driver booked for raping woman, extorting Rs 10 lakh from her

Fed up of the harassment, the woman on Sunday approached the Worli police, who registered a zero FIR and transferred the case to NM Joshi Marg police station as the place of incident falls in their jurisdiction.

An app-based cab driver was booked on Sunday for allegedly befriending a 41-year-old woman passenger and raping her on multiple occasions since 2023. The accused driver also blackmailed the woman and extorted Rs 10 lakh from her, police said.

According to personnel of NM Joshi Marg police station, the woman, who works with a private company, filed a complaint on Sunday stating that she hired the cab of the accused Ajit Singh in February 2023. The accused, a resident of Kharghar in Navi Mumbai, befriended her during the trip and exchanged contact numbers, following which the two started chatting.

As per the woman’s complaint, on March 22, 2023, Singh gave her spiked juice and established physical relationship with her against her will at a hotel in Worli. He also allegedly shot obscene photos and videos, using which he blackmailed her and raped her on multiple occasions, states the FIR.

“The woman alleged that the accused extorted Rs 10 lakh from her by threatening to kill her younger son. When she refused to give more money to him, he snatched her mobile and uploaded a message on Facebook calling the woman a ‘call girl’ and defamed her,” a police officer said.

Police have booked Singh under sections 308(2)(extortion), 351(2)(criminal intimidation) 356(2)(defamation), 64 (rape) and 64(2)(repeatedly raping) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

“We have registered a case of rape and extortion and are further verifying the allegations of the woman. We have formed teams to trace the accused,” said an officer from the NM Joshi Marg police station.
