Byculla Zoo,which is gearing up to embark upon its ambitious Rs 433 crore makeover plan, got its new director on Monday. Taking charge,Anil M Anjanker, former director of the Pune zoo, said that one of his prime responsibilities would be to facilitate and oversee the implementation of the state-of-the-art makeover within the stipulated time.

The masterplan of the 53-acre zoo has been approved by the Central Zoo Authority but awaits a final nod from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC). “In our next meeting,we plan to sort out pending issues and clarify all the doubts of MHCC. We are looking forward to obtain all the necessary approvals by next week,” said Anjanker.

A post graduate (diploma) from the Wildlife Institute of India,Dehradun,Anjankar had held the directorial post at Pune’s Peshwe Zoo (from November 2001-2006) and was the deputy director at Nagpur’s Gorewada Zoo project (2008-March 31,2010).

Sources at the Byculla Zoo said that having monitored the shifting of the Peshwe Zoo to Katraj,Anjankar would have the right experience to supervise the new zoo. Nagpur’s Gorewada Zoo project, expected to cost about Rs 62.17 lakh is also scheduled to begin soon.

Anjankar said that he was still being updated on the Mumbai zoo makeover and was studying the project maps. However, pointing out the need for tightening security with effect,so that accidents like the recent episode in the elephant enclosure don’t occur,he said,“We will immediately start fixing loopholes in the security system to ensure the safety of the animals and the visitors. Security will be increased near enclosures.”
