Nearly six years ago, five boys from Mumbai came together and formed a band. They called themselves Medusa. Playing mostly progressive metal, they joined the ranks of a number of other bands in the city who were also experimenting with various sub-genres of metal.
Today, the Medusa of the last decade is barely recognisable. For one, they arent called Medusa any more. Earlier this year, the band rechristened themselves Sky Rabbit,a name they believe is more in conjunction with the music they now play. A couple of line-up changes along the way led to the five-member outfit becoming four. The band is now made up of Raxit Tewari (vocals/samples),Rahul Nadkarn(guitar/samples),Siddharth Shah (bass) and Harsh Karangale (drums).
Having become popular as Medusa, the name change aroused a great deal of curiosity among fans. But the band says this change was inevitable and was planned years ago when their sound began progressing from metal to a blend of indie,post-punk,alternative and electronica. Sky Rabbit, they say,is a far more imaginative name. It was something we had planned back when we started fiddling with electronics, says Tewari. To me,it denotes a lot of the freedom and imagination that we want to imbibe as artists. Nadkarni agrees and says,For me,the name brings up nice images.
Cementing these changes, the band will release their debut,self-titled album on January 10. Comprising nine songs, all of which fans will have heard at gigs over the years, the album opens with the popular Anti-coke Ganpati and closes with Hilltop.
Sky Rabbits tracks are often reminiscent of the music of
English bands Radiohead,Blur and Gorillaz. And like these bands,it is difficult to define the Mumbai-based bands music under one or two genres.
Alternative rock meets electronica would, perhaps, best describe a majority of their songs. But the music, coupled with Tewaris vocals, exhibits a certain sense of calm that is unique to them. As Shah says,it incorporates all the traditional rock elements of drums, guitar and bass, but goes far beyond.
Currently on an album launch tour across the country that began earlier this month and will continue through January,Sky Rabbit has been garnering more fans with every performance.
