In the wake of deteriorating Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on October 13 held a workshop for real estate developers to ensure proper dust management procedures are implemented. The BMC in its Mumbai Air Pollution Mitigation Action Plan (MAPMP) had identified construction dust as one of the major contributing factors behind Mumbai’s poor air quality.

The workshop was organised by members of National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO), CREDAI-MCHI, Practice Engineers Architects and Town Planners Association (PITA).

Mumbai is growing rapidly. New infrastructure projects, housing and transport facilities are being built. Along with this rapid development, there are also challenges related to mitigation of construction dust and emissions. Therefore, as a preventive measure, builders need to implement mitigation measures to contain dust displacement. The workshop is being held to ensure the BMC’s guidelines are followed seamlessly to ensure that there is a healthy environment for Mumbaikars,” said Avinash Kate, deputy municipal commissioner (Environment).

BMC has jointly coordinated the workshop with World Resources Institute (WRI), India.

Meanwhile, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) dashboard, Mumbai’s overall AQI stood at 139 which is regarded as moderate. However, pockets like Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) continued to record poor AQI at 201, while the remaining 23 stations recorded AQI levels within the moderate category.
