BMC demolishes commercial complex near Versova beach

A commercial complex built on land along the Versova beach was demolished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Thursday.

A commercial complex built on land along the Versova beach was demolished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Thursday. The ground plus two storeyed structure at Bazaar Road in Versova falls under the Coastal Regulation Zone. Despite notices from the civic body to the builders in the past two months, the accused allegedly continued to construct the building, officials said.

The BMC has registered a complaint with the Versova police against builders Nitin Shetty and Sarvesh Shetty. The accused have been booked under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act.

The ground floor of the structure had ten shops while the first and second floor had been recently constructed and were unoccupied. “While the structure was coming up we had warned them and demolished a part of the structure. Since they continued with the construction we had to demolish the entire building,” said assistant municipal commissioner Ramesh Pawar.

The demolition was carried out in the presence of 50 policemen. The BMC has also asked the police to book the duo under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act.
