In BMC Budget, civic body proposes ambitious ‘Mumbai Eye’ project
According to BMC budget 2025, the Mumbai Eye would be built under a PPP model at a yet-to-be-determined location.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proposed the construction of Mumbai Eye as part of its Budget presented on Tuesday. The proposal aims to create a major tourist attraction similar to the renowned London Eye, despite multiple unsuccessful attempts by various agencies over the past 15 years to establish a similar structure in Mumbai.
According to the BMC Budget 2025, the Mumbai Eye would be built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at a yet-to-be-determined location. Modelled after the London Eye — which is also known as the Millennium Wheel, a 135-metre (443-foot) ferris wheel located on the banks of the River Thames — Mumbai Eye would feature air-conditioned, sealed passenger capsules, each capable of holding 25 people. The wheel would rotate to provide an elevated view of the city.
The attraction, which would offer panoramic views of the city, was initially envisioned by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) back in 2011. However, the project never materialised. In 2023, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) revived the idea, proposing a location at the Bandra Reclamation promenade. In May 2023, the agency even invited bids for a project management consultant and began preparations for a technical feasibility report and the tendering process.
However, the proposal faced strong opposition from Bandra Reclamation residents, citing concerns over traffic congestion and restrictions from the Ministry of Environment and Forests on development activities in the reclaimed area. As a result, the project was ultimately scrapped.
With BMC now stepping forward with the proposal, it becomes the third agency to attempt to bring the Mumbai Eye to life. The London Eye has inspired numerous similar attractions in major tourist cities worldwide.
