Big Man Shaq goes from MVP to pursuing PhD

Shaquille O’Neal is an NBA legend,a perpetual entertainer. When he wasn’t winning NBA championships, receiving multiple awards,pulling-down rebounds, using all of his 325 pounds to bull-doze through defences and bring the house down with his monstrous slam dunks; he was making dud movies, dissing Kobe Bryant in his rap songs and hosting reality shows. Post retirement, however,he has decided to take a break from the loud and audacious behaviour and delve into the world of academics. “I’m going to spend my time pursuing a PhD in Human Resource Development,” Shaq told The Indian Express on Tuesday.

You can’t keep the man completely away from basketball or entertainment, however, and so he has taken up a role alongside Charles Barkley – former NBA star and entertainer-in-chief – with a TV show named ‘Inside the NBA’. And his first announcement on the show indicated relief after the end of the 149-day lockout. “Players are hard-done by,but it’s good for the fans that they’ll get to see some action again,” he said. Christmas day will offer the exciting prospect of five thrilling opening season matches, but the shortened season will have it’s drawbacks. “The games will be crammed together. There is a chance of more injuries. We are sitting back watching who is getting traded, which team is doing what. I like that they are rushing it. I like it because it causes some drama,” he said.

None other than him, however, created more drama when it came to his constant rivalry with Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant. He claims to have had no issues with the current LA superstar. “I never had any differences with Kobe. The papers just like to publish whatever they want,” he said. Whether he found it tough to get along with either Anfernee ‘Penny’ Hardaway of the Orlando Magic or Bryant,he never let it affect him on court. His four NBA and an Olympic gold are testament to the fact. “When I get on the court,I just focus on dominating my opponent and making them cry,” he said. The 7”1’ former center has even gone far enough to say that Kobe Bryant is one of the best players he has played alongside. “Dwayne Wade is up there too. If I had a chance I would have loved to play alongside Dr J (Julius Erving). I idolised him,” he said. Shaq feels that it was his ferocity that scared most of his opponents and he sees that same ferocity in Orlando center – Dwight Howard. “He’s a good player. He is strong and aggressive like I was,” he said.

Shaq’s most entertaining interaction with Dwight Howard was on a basketball court but during an impromptu dance-off which involved LeBron James. He did the robot to perfection, moved his body gracefully for a giant and performed the ‘worm’ with near-perfect wriggles. “I used to a lot of break-dance on the streets when I was a kid,” he said.
