Beach Blues

The quaint ambience barely makes up for the disappointing food at Silver Beach Cafe.

The cutest thing about Juhu’s Silver Beach Cafe is the bench outside the entrance. It’s where guests waiting for their table can sit, chitchat and perhaps take in their surroundings,a quiet residential neighbourhood lined with trees. Despite the name, the place doesn’t offer any plush views of the beach, but the glass walls allow you to gaze outside and drift away over the meal. The interiors, dominated by wood, give the restaurant a cosy, rustic feel.

However, little else seems right, starting with the menu. First up is the one-page introduction to the cafe, detailing how they discovered it and why,in their own words,it’s beautiful, pristine and cute.

The food, which they claim upholds to the tastes of “people who have arrived”,was a bit of a rude shock. We decided to order the Tangy Chicken Curls and Temura Shrimp for starters, both of which tasted like reheated frozen food, garnished with Manchurian and sweet-and-sour sauce respectively.

The selection of thin crust pizzas was interesting. It featured items such as Authentic Italian Pepperoni and a curious anomaly more suited to dessert, called the Chocolate Pizza. But we decided to go with the Forest Mushrooms and Spring Onion Pizza, which turned out to be regular mushrooms immersed in a variety of cheese that kept getting stuck in our teeth.

Keeping with the cafe culture, there is wine and beer,

but the menu is limited. However, they make up for it with a variety of wine cocktails.

We were in the mood to experiment so we ordered Aromatic Spinach with Blue Cheese Rissotto. The dish did have a hint of blue cheese but the flavour of the spinach, mixed into the cheese as a purée,was too weak to shine through.

The desserts section on the menu was peculiar. “We at

Silver Beach Café believe that ladies living in Bombay make amazing desserts, hence we outsource them,” it read, asking customers to recommend dessert chefs so they could add their names and numbers to the menu.

Silver Beach Cafe has a great property, but the overall product is a mishmash of great ambience and terrible food. But while it might not work as a destination for meals,it still has some potential — lone explorers looking for a pit stop, hoping to grab a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of wine before heading off into the sunset.

Meal for two with drinks costs Rs 3,000.
